Liverpool ex-pat Debbie Murray caught up in Spanish wildfires

A LIVERPOOL expat living in Spain has sent pictures of the fires sweeping through the country causing devastation in their wake.

Debbie Murray, who lives in Mojacar Pueblo in Almeria said more than 100,000 people had been evacuated from around her home.

She said: "Sahara dessert winds with heat of up to 45 degrees caused these fires to escalate which have been going since 12pm yesterday.

"By 10.30pm last night Spain time the whole of Mojacar Mountain was on fire.

"The fires have continued today as more helicopters are brought in to try and control the fires."

The fire has already claimed the lives of five firefighters and injured two. A local government official said the fire had started in a remote section of forest in the Els Ports nature Park.
