Two of Liverpool’s flagship buildings shortlisted for ‘Carbuncle’ award

THE inclusion of two of Liverpool’s flagship developments on a list to find the worst new building in the UK has provoked a fierce backlash.

Grosvenor’s One Park West, and the Pier Head ferry terminal building, have both been nominated by the public for the 2009 Carbuncle Cup.

One described the new £10.5m Pier Head ferry terminal building as “bad enough in isolation, but alongside the classic listed buildings it sticks out like a sore thumb.”

But fans of the buildings have rallied to their defence.

Alistair Sunderland, partner at city centre architects’ firm Austin-Smith: Lord, said One Park West – designed by world renowned architect Cesar Pelli – was a key part of the Liverpool One masterplan.

“It’s a civilised and urbane building by an internationally recognised architect of considerable ability,” said Mr Sunderland.
