A POPULAR Cheshire soldier died as he battled to save a wounded comrade in Afghanistan.
Fusilier Simon Annis, 22, was killed trying to stretcher his section commander, James Fullarton, to safety.
Both men died in an explosion alongside Fusilier Louis Carter – who dived on LCpl Fullarton’s stretcher in an effort to save him.
The soldiers were killed on patrol in Helmand, on Sunday.
Fus Annis, who grew up in Warrington, married just six months before he died.
His devastated wife, Caroline, called him the “perfect husband”.
She said: “He was a true hero who made all of us proud.
“We will love and miss him always.”
The ex-Culcheth High School pupil’s comrades rushed to praise a soldier they called “a legend”.
He joined his local infantry, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, when he was just 19.
