Superfast trains will be boon for Liverpool’s business and tourism

Where else can you go in 83 minutes?

NETWORK Rail’s 1,500-page cost-benefits report says it wants to run 200mph trains from London to Scotland, via Liverpool.

That will cut journey times by around a third – and, Network Rail (NR) claims, “almost eradicate domestic air travel”. But where can you get to from Liverpool in 1hr23mins?

It currently takes more than 1hr30mins to get to Birmingham from the city. A direct train to Leeds is 1hr47mins.

The NR plans would see two trains per hour shuttling between London, Warrington and Liverpool.

A “typical” timetable also shows trains running between Birmingham and Manchester, with a 38 minute journey time. But passengers leaving Liverpool would not be able to take the new line to anywhere but London and Warrington.
