Call for rail safety review after Liverpool train derailment

RAIL accident investigators have called for a review after a train derailed when its engine fell out on to the track.

Three passengers and one member of the crew suffered minor injuries when its back wheels came off the track at the Olive Mount junction between Broadgreen Station and Wavertree Technology Park in June.

The Liverpool-bound train, which had set off from Blackpool, had 40 passengers.

They all managed to climb out and were escorted to safety by Merseyside firefighters and British Transport Police officers.

Passengers described battling their way through smoke.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) report reveals that at 57mph the 10-litre engine fell when its crankshaft broke.

It later revealed signs of fatigue.

Underneath, the rear coach of the 142 Pacer class was severely damaged along with 330m of track and huge amounts of diesel were spilled.
