Church to improve security at SS Peter and Paul presbytery in New Brighton over insurance fears

AN APPLICATION has been submitted to erect security fencing around a Wirral church amid fears it could be targeted by vandals.

Shrewsbury Diocese has made the application on behalf of SS Peter and Paul’s presbytery, in New Brighton amid concerns its insurance could become invalid.

Known to sailors as the “Dome of Home”, the distinctive building was closed by Roman Catholic authorities in 2008.

The Diocese cited increasing maintenance costs as the reason behind the decision, which prompted a furious response from parishioners and heritage groups.

Now the Diocese has applied to increase security at the now abandoned presbytery with the completion of perimeter fencing at its boundary.

The application made to Wirral Council reads: “Due to the house’s secluded and elevated location and the ease of access to the house from the former church car park, the Diocese were rightly concerned that it could become an easy target for vandals.

“The Diocesan insurers had also advised that if the house were to be left unoccupied for any length of time then unless it was protected from forced access and vandal damage then insurance cover was not available.”

It states the colour and style of the new paladin fence would match the existing fence.
