THE Law Society has published research debunking the fear pro bono work would reduce during the recession.
It says, in a poll taken among junior lawyers, 58% said they expected the free work offered by solicitors would fall off.
But statistics from the charity LawWorks – which links firms with charitable projects – indicate pro bono is booming.
LawWorks has already worked with 106 member firms this year, almost the same number that participated throughout the whole of last year.
It reported a 43% rise in the amount of individual casework advice provided in the first half of 2009, compared with the same period in 2008.
There was also a 50% rise in the use of its email advice service, a 22% increase in community groups casework and a 10% rise in advice at clinics.
