Tesco withdraws plans for Liverpool Hope Street store

“I’m so proud of all the people who joined the Facebook campaign, and it just goes to show that people power can make a difference.

“I am absolutely thrilled Tesco listened.

“I hold out the hand of friendship to Sir Terry Leahy, because he has absolutely done the right thing. I take my hat off to him.”

Spearheading the internet campaign was actor Mike Neary, who said: “I was careful not to use the group for rabble- rousing, but for democratic, reasoned debate, as I thought there would be a greater chance of them listening to people.

“There are no brand names on Hope Street, and as a consequence the area is unique.

“I’m delighted with Tesco for their actions.”

Local Labour councillor Steve Munby said: "This is a win for everybody.

“Not just for Hope Street but Tesco as well, because they have shown themselves to be a socially-responsible company which listens."

Michael Eakin, chief executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, based on Hope Street,Šsaid: “This shows a real responsiveness to the views of the cultural, education and business organisations on Hope Street.

“The company have clearly come to understand the unique qualities that Hope Street offers and, after reflection, have taken a responsible decision.”
