Merseyside Girl Guides and Brownies jump aboard the Brownie Express

HUNDREDS of Merseyside Girl Guides and Brownies celebrated their centenary aboard a special steam train.

The St Helens Girlguiding Centenary Express was organised by the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo.

They were the only Girlguiding Division in the country to mark its 100th anniversary on a steam train.

The Brownies and Guides wanted to take a trip on the LDPE’s summer steam trains from Liverpool, but these ended before the centenary weekend.

Instead, a special train was arranged for the 18 units of 326 Rainbows, Brownies, Girl Guidies, leaders and Trefoil Group ex-guiders.

They were “flagged off” by the Mayor of St Helens, Cllr Terry Sheilds, from St Helens Junction to York and back.

A special headboard was made for the train and the Scots Guardsman steam locomotive was renamed The Girl Guide for the trip.
