MPs to intervene in Pentagon hacker case

THREE senior MPs are preparing to urge Home Secretary Alan Johnson to prevent the extradition of computer hacker Gary McKinnon.

Former Labour minister Michael Meacher, ex-shadow home secretary David Davis and Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne will meet Mr Johnson at the Home Office today.

Mr McKinnon, aged 43, from north London, suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome and is wanted for trial in the US on charges of hacking into military networks. But campaigners believe his only crime was searching for evidence of extra-terrestrials.

In July, Mr McKinnon failed in his High Court bid to avoid extradition.

Mr Huhne said: “The aim is to appeal to the Home Secretary’s better nature and to persuade him to intervene on behalf of a vulnerable British citizen to ensure that he is tried at home.

“Gary could be tried for his crime in Britain, which is where it was committed.”
