LIVERPOOL cemented its position as an internationally-ranked centre for culture as one of the world’s major names in classical music announced his further commitment to the city.

Celebrated Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko has signed a new contract with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra that will allow him to showcase its talent across the globe.

City leaders last night said his decision to stay put until 2015 is a sign of Liverpool’s continued cultural prowess, after the success of its Capital of Culture year.

Phil Redmond, who was instrumental in planning 2008, said: “It’s a fantastic endorsement that he is happy to stay here and help the city grow. It sends the message that it’s still happening in Liverpool and we are still at the centre of the creative universe.”

The 33-year-old maestro signed a three-year extension to his contract, taking it to a total of nine years.

Petrenko’s decision will enable the RLPO to extend its programme of international touring and expand its local audience at the Philharmonic hall.

He said: “I am very excited about what was a logical decision for me, and with this commitment we can go even further in achieving our ambitions.

“I’m looking forward to working with our musicians over the next six years, to continuing to play great music for our audiences, and bringing many more people into our concerts in a world-class venue here in Liverpool to share the excitement and passion of classical music.”

Petrenko, whose title will change from principal to chief conductor, will continue to present at least 25 concerts in Liverpool each season, in addition to national and international dates, recordings and special events.
