Michael Eakin, RLPO chief executive, described the conductor’s determination to push the orchestra to its potential as “truly inspirational”. He said: “The fact that Vasily, who has such an international reputation, is prepared to commit to the Phil and the city sends an incredible message about where we are and where we want to be.”

He said the orchestra’s musicians were thrilled to learn they would be working with the conductor for another three years.

Mr Eakin said: “Everyone is delighted because they all love working with him.

“His musical vision, his commitment to the Phil and his absolute determination to never rest on his laurels, but to continuously push himself, the orchestra and the Phil to improve still further, is truly inspirational.”

Petrenko took up the baton as principal conductor in September, 2006, as the youngest person in RLPO history to have held the position.

Born in St Petersburg, Russia, he is recognised as one of the exceptional musicians of his generation.

Warren Bradley, Liverpool City Council leader, said: “Vasily was one of the stars of our Capital of Culture year and it bodes well for the cultural health of Liverpool and the future of the Phil that we have such a wonderfully talented conductor who wants to commit himself to the city and invest it with so much of his infectious energy and enthusiasm.”

The announcement came on the eve of the RLPO’s 2009/10 season opening concert.

The sell-out show features music from Petrenko’s home country.
