Hospital in flying visit to Britain

THE world’s only flying eye hospital touched down in Britain to reveal its work across the world.

The converted DC-10 plane’s state-of-the-art equipment was showcased at Stansted airport on a rare visit to the UK.

Run by international sight-saving charity Orbis, the Flying Eye Hospital travels round the world offering operations and teaching local doctors and nurses as part of Orbis’s work to reduce avoidable blindness in poorer countries.

Medical volunteers, including consultant ophthalmologists, anaesthetists and nurses, travel across the continents carrying out sight-saving operations and passing on knowledge and skills to their colleagues overseas.

Yesterday, consultant ophthalmologist and chairman of Orbis UK’s trustees, Rob Walters, said: “We are delighted to be hosted by BAA Stansted.

“The Flying Eye Hospital is rarely in Europe, so we are thrilled to be able to thank supporters.”
