VETERAN Parliamentarian Tony Benn and radical MP George Galloway will be among those addressing rallies during next week’s annual conference of the Trades Union Congress, in Liverpool.
There will be anti-fascist marches and rallies, an anti-racism vigil and the meeting of a task force to combat homophobia in sport, to coincide with the return of the conference to the city for the first time in 103 years.
The first demonstration will take place on Sunday, with a march from the Pier Head to the BT Convention Centre, where the conference is to be held.
RMT General Secretary Bob Crowe will address marchers on the “Time to Fight Back” theme opposing privatisation of public services and wage-freezes.
His number two, Len McClusky, will also speak at the event, before, on Monday – the first full day of the conference – the “silent vigil” to be held in protest at the recent election of two far-right BNP members to the European Parliament.
The event will be led by Gee Walker, mother of murdered Huyton teenager Anthony, who was killed by racist thugs in 2005.
That will be followed on Tuesday by a fringe meeting at the Adelphi Hotel, which will be addressed by veteran Labour campaigner Mr Benn, Unite General Secretary Tony Woodley and radical “Respect” MP Mr Galloway.
