Wirral's Mostyn House School opens its doors to show visitors how it started as a busy port hotel

But the true character of the hotel and its history has not been lost with original walls, beams, floors, and features retained despite the school’s enlargement.

Where the grand entrance porch to the hotel once stood, lockers now line the corridor and the school nurse now works across two small parlour rooms with original seafront windows.

Upstairs, the old bedrooms that became rooms for boarders back in the old days still have original cornices, external walls and small wooden doors with brass knobs that now lead to nowhere.

The hotel is just one part of the school’s illustrious history that will be open on Saturday with tours at 2, 2.30, 3 and 3.30pm.

Its beautiful Grade II listed Chapel of St Nicholas, which houses seven stained glass windows by Arts and Craft designer Robert Anning Bell, will also be open Saturday and Sunday, 2-4pm.

Another hidden gem, the school’s air raid shelter, under the playing fields, will open on Saturday, 2-4pm.
