Mr Twigg, who rose to fame when he took the Enfield seat from Tory Michael Portillo in the 1997 general election, said he could see how their names could be confused.
He said as far as he knew, he would be above Cllr Twigger on the ballot paper because his Liberal Democrat rival had more letters in his surname.
He added: “I think people will see the different party logos, or will have heard from each of us.
“If people accidentally vote for him, not me, maybe there will be people who vote for me instead of him, so that could cancel it out.”
Liberal councillor Steve Radford, who will also contest the seat, said Cllr Twigger and Mr Twigg had more in common than their names. Cllr Radford added: “I call them the two Twiglets. They’re both flimsy, and you can usually find them whenever there is a complementary buffet laid on.”
