Liverpool Reads launches with thousands of free copies of graphic novel The Savage

VOLUNTEERS from Merseyside fire service filled their engines with free books to deliver across the region.

They were among thousands of copies of the graphic novel chosen for this year’s Liverpool Reads, which are available from libraries and other city venues.

The Savage, by David Almond and Dave McKean, was chosen for the biggest event in the project’s five-year history.

Almond met fire service volunteers at the city’s Central Library yesterday.

Free copies will be available from libraries across Merseyside and Warrington, bus stations, bookshops, Starbucks in Bold Street and even Liverpool FC stores.

The annual Liverpool Reads project, co-ordinated by Liverpool university-based charity The Reader Organisation, aims to encourage the reading and sharing of one book each year.

Previous books have included Andrea Levy’s Small Island and Mal Peet’s Tamar and Keeper.
