Liverpool soldier killed in firefight in Afghanistan

A LIVERPOOL soldier was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan.

Kingsman Jason Dunn-Bridgeman, 20, of 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, died in the Babaji district of Helmand province on Sunday.

His comrades said he had volunteered to go to Afghanistan early.

Kingsman Dunn-Bridgeman, of West Derby, deployed on August 18 as part of reinforcements for the Light Dragoons Battle Group in Babaji.

He had only just put himself forward to switch from Arnhem Company to Blenheim Company, knowing the latter would be one of the first units sent out to bolster UK forces in Helmand.

British troops endured fierce fighting in Babaji over the su mmer as part of Operation Panther’s Claw, a mission aimed at driving the Taliban out of a former stronghold.

Kingsman Dunn-Bridgeman was made a member of a four-man bomb clearance team tasked with finding improvised explosive devices laid by insurgents.

During a foot patrol on Sunday, his platoon became involved in an exchange of fire with insurgents. He was shot in the neck and died from his wounds. The serviceman was remembered by his fellow soldiers as “popular, friendly, quick-witted and selfless”.
