HIGHER education minister David Lammy has applauded a scheme which encourages black Liverpool students to go on to university.
Government-backed Aim Higher Greater Merseyside runs the Reaching High project, which was set up in response to a national under-attainment of black boys and their continued under-representation in higher education.
Projects include students receiving tuition in media and publishing skills, culminating in the eventual production of a youth culture magazine aimed commercially at black males amongst their own age group.
And yesterday, at an Aim Higher conference looking at black boys’ progression at Liverpool University, Mr Lammy praised the scheme after meeting students and looking at some of their work.
He said the scheme “makes aiming for higher education real; it shows people like you go and succeed.”
