Relief as 'round the world' Liverpool film maker is released

A MERSEYSIDE filmmaker was freed last night after being held without charge in the Democratic Republic of Congo while on a round-the-world trip, his brother said.

Graham Hughes, 30, from Liverpool, was arrested last week in Brazzaville, the country’s capital, while taking part in a challenge to travel to the 192 UN member states by public transport.

The adventurer was held at a checkpoint on Thursday when officers accused him of taking pictures of political figures.

But last night Alex Hughes, 33, said his younger brother had phoned home after being freed.

“All his possessions have been returned and he has been released without charge,” said Alex.

“It’s a big relief.”
