She said: “We have been trying for many years to regenerate this area of Wirral and I will be lobbying the external funding agencies to provide the money which will make these proposals a reality.”
David Ball, head of housing and regeneration for Wirral, said: “We think this would be a great public asset and very attractive part of the regeneration.”
It would also allow the club to host national and international sailing events from Wirral – currently many of these have to held elsewhere.
“This is currently an isolated backwater, with derelict buildings and an area that is struggling, yet is next to Rock Park, which is a conservation area with a significant history.”
The plans could also see an exit road from and to the A41 bypass which would improve access to that area of coastline.
Cabinet member for regeneration, Jean Stapleton, said she would be working to ensure the scheme is pushed forward.
Cllr Stapleton said: “These proposals are significant and should be included in the ‘Adapting the Landscape Study’ which is currently being undertaken by the NWDA and its partners.”
She said the Agency has supported the waterfront development in recent years and this could be part of programmes such as Newlands2.
Cllr Stapleton said: “Such proposals bring significant economic and social benefits not only to Wirral but also to the Liverpool City Region.”
