Thousands flock to Liverpool's Hope Steet Feast festival 2009

THOUSANDS of people lapped up the delights and flavours of this year’s Hope Street Feast Festival. The massive party, which took over the city’s streets yesterday for the fourth consecutive year, was packed with music, theatre, dance, food, drink and local produce.

Its theme was The Big Nosh, and all sorts of colourful and wacky creatures weaved between the crowds who were busy enjoying the carnival atmosphere.

Stalls, which stretched the length of Hope Street, from LIPA to the Everyman Theatre, offered a vast range of food fromLiverpool’s finest eateries and farmers' markets, and created a cocktail of sweet scents in the air while theatrical street productions entertained the masses.

There were three open-air music stages, with LIPA running the Blackburne Place stage and Guinness Liverpool Irish Festival on the Hardman Street stage.

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall hosted three free concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Blackburne House put on talks for those wanting to learn more about the music being played.

The Unity and Everyman Theatres, and both Liverpool cathedrals, also put on a variety of activities as other buildings, businesses and organisations around Hope Street opened their doors to join in the festival.

Peter Ward, producer of the Big Nosh, said: “The day was fantastic.

“There was a phenomenal turn-out with a variety of people, from young to old, attending the event.

“Everybody I saw just had a huge smile on their face and enjoyed every minute of their day.
