River Mersey is cleaner than at any time since the Industrial Revolution, Liverpool conference hears

Lord Heseltine joined other speakers at the conference, including the Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, and the government’s former chief scientific advisor, Professor David King.

Of the convention centre, Prof King said: “When I left Liverpool in the 1980s, I could never have dreamed I would be coming back to such a spectacular setting.”

The conference, which was attended by about 500 people, also had a live video link from London with the Environment Secretary Hilary Benn.

He said: “The health of our economy ultimately relies on the health of our environment.

“As you mark the end of this 25-year journey, the passion and spirit you brought are exactly what we need as we face the challenges of the next 25 years.”
