Chester to bid for replica theatre from Shakespeare in Love

Artistic director of the British Shakespeare Company (BSC), Robert J Williamson said: “The BSCŠare delighted that the city of Chester has expressed a keen interest in Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre.

Š“The original Rose was where Shakespeare first came to prominence as a playwright and the replica will be a building of iconic status –Šrecognised around the world.”

However, Chester will have to compete with other cities – including York, Manchester and Sheffield, to bring the Rose to Chester.

ŠCouncil leader Mike Jones said the authority would be meeting with BSC representatives in November.

ŠHe said: “I believe that Chester offers the perfect backdrop for The Rose, including suitable sites, and we will be seeking major support for an idea of unlimited potential.”

ŠA feasibility study is currently under way into proposals for a £30mŠtheatreŠand conference centre, and the authority recently announced plans to enhance the appeal of Chester’s Roman amphitheatre as an open-air performance venue.

ŠChester’s Gateway Theatre, closed its doors in April, 2007, after a period of declining viability.
