STEPHEN HESFORD was elected to Parliament as Labour swept to power in 1997, dislodging Conservative MP David Hunt in Wirral West.
The former barrister, 52, was given his first Government job in 2005, working as Parliamentary private secretary to Leader of the House of Lords Baroness Amos.
Two years later, he became a Parliamentary aide to the Law Officers, where he remained until his resignation yesterday.
He contested his first election in Suffolk in 1992, but finished in third place.
Rarely a Labour rebel, he did put his name to a motion opposing part-privatisation of the Royal Mail earlier this year.
