CHESHIRE West and Chester’s Conservative administration has come under fire from their opposition after agreeing to sell its Chester headquarters.
Labour leader, Cllr Derek Bateman, said the sale of the historic County Hall in Chester was “an act of vandalism” and “a travesty”.
Last month, the new authority revealed it planned to sell off its HQ – previously home to the defunct Cheshire County Council – to the University of Chester.
The council will then move across Nicholas Street into a recently completed building in a £28.75m deal.
The Conservative authority said the agreement will “provide a prestigious riverside site for a university steadily growing in size and reputation and a state-of-the-art office accommodation” for the new council.
At the time, council leader Cllr Mike Jones said: “Whichever way you look at this decision, it is a good one for city and university, simply because each benefits from the other.”
