Liverpool’s bid to be World Cup city to cost £200,000

THE city of Liverpool is spending £200,000 to convince the FA that the city is capable of hosting World Cup matches.

Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle said that it was “bonkers” that such a sum was having to be spent in a city synonymous the world over with top-class football.

Liverpool is hoping to be chosen as a host city for England’s 2018 or 2022 World Cup Bid.

But it is having to go through the same process as the likes of Plymouth and Portsmouth to prove to FA chiefs it can be a host city.

Labour leader Joe Anderson said the overwhelming case for Liverpool hosting games could be summed up in a couple of sheets of A4.

A city council spokesman said other cities were spending similar amounts and hosting World Cup Games was something Liverpool could not miss out on.

The Liverpool bid was launched at the beginning of September at the Echo Arena.

So far, £150,000 has been spent out of a budget of £200,000.
