A BLOCK of flats severely damaged when a crane toppled on to them in the city centre will not be demolished.
The 200ft crane crashed into Chandler’s Wharf in July, causing a substantial amount of damage.
The crane driver, who was flung from his cabin onto the block’s roof, is still in a stable condition in hospital.
Residents were initially told their homes would be demolished, but the building’s agent, Honeybourne Kenny, has confirmed it is instead planning to save it.
Work to restore the building, which still has the crane’s five-tonne counterweight embedded in it, will begin in the New Year once its former occupiers have had all their belongings returned.
Peter Kenny, of Honeybourne Kenny, said: “We are not considering demolishing the building and reconstruction should start in the first week of the New Year.”
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been carrying out an investigation into the crash and its investigators are working closely with Honeybourne Kenny.
