Thousands at Bishop of Warrington’s service of farewell
THOUSANDS packed into Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral to say goodbye to the Bishop of Warrington, who is retiring.
The Right Reverend David Jennings has held the post in the Diocese of Liverpool since 2000.
Almost 2,500 people attended the service of thanksgiving for Bishop David, after which the Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverend James Jones, gave a speech paying tribute to his deputy, and gifts were presented to the outgoing clergyman.
The post of Bishop of Warrington is second only in the diocese to the Bishop of Liverpool himself, and assists with the church’s high-level management issues.
Bishop David, along with his wife, Sally, and his grandchildren, stood at the high altar as they were presented with retirement gifts, including glassware and items for their garden at their new home in the Cotswolds.
A diocese spokesman said it was a moving sight.
He said: “Bishop David was standing there in full regalia and surrounded by his grandchildren, who were opening the presents.”
Bishop James said: “Bishop David has excelled in all he has done for the diocese.
“His tireless service was a model for us all. His care of the clergy, the parishes and the schools made a huge impact on the diocese, which is so much stronger because of his ministry.
“We wish him and Sally God’s richest blessing.”
