Dancers from across Merseyside joined together to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Foundation
DANCERS young and old came together in Liverpool yesterday to raise funds for the Roy Castle Lung Foundation.
More than 140 dancers took part in Liverpool’s first Roy Castle Tapathon, in the city’s Contemporary Urban Centre.
The event is the brainchild of Derek Hamer, a close friend and dance partner of entertainer Roy Castle, who died of lung cancer in 1994.
Derek has organised tapathons across the country and took to the stage to inspire the other dancers.
Dance groups from across Merseyside took part in tap, jazz, Irish and other forms of dance to raise individual sponsorship for the Foundation.
Among those taking part were the Carmen Maria Academy of Dance and Drama from Crosby, the Merseyside Dance Initiative, from Liverpool city centre, and the Adagio Dance School, which has two Wirral dance bases, in Birkenhead and Bebington.
It is hoped the event will have raised around £2,500 for the Foundation, which is committed to medical research, reducing smoking and patient support.
