BOOKMAKERS have been placing odds on who is favourite to win the RIBA Stirling Prize.
The institute is looking for the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year, and the prize is open to any building designed by a British architect who is a member of RIBA, or any firm in the EU with its main office in the UK.
The current 6/4 favourite, according to bookmakers William Hill, is the Fuglsang Kunstmuseum, in Denmark, by Tony Fretton Architects.
Coming in at odds of 9/2 are two very different buildings by the same practice, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. They have been shortlisted for their palliative care hospital, Maggie's Centre, in London, and Spanish winery Bodegas Protos.
Sharing Liverpool One and BDP’s 5/1 odds is London’s 5, Aldermanbury Square by Eric Parry Architects, an 18-storey mixed use complex.
Finally, at 6/1, is Kentish Town Health Centre, in London, designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
William Hill is expecting a flurry of last-minute bets ahead of the announcement on Saturday night.
RIBA President Sunand Prasad said: “This year's shortlist really embodies the wide-ranging spirit of the RIBA Stirling Prize – from a winery to health centres, from an art museum in open country to major transformations of dense inner-city areas. The judges have a hard but eagerly anticipated decision to make.”
The jury will visit all six shortlisted buildings, and then meet for a final time on the day of the presentation to pick the winner.
