THOUSANDS of spectators were left disappointed after strong winds forced the cancellation of the last night of the British Musical Fireworks Championships.
The decision was taken at the last minute, as many people queued patiently for entry to the site.
But after discussions between organisers and safety experts, it was decided the weather conditions meant it would be too dangerous for the event to go ahead.
It is the first time in the event’s 11-year history that a performance has had to be cancelled.
Sefton Council’s head of tourism, Tony Corfield, said: “It’s very disappointing but, if we’d gone ahead, the public would have been put at substantial risk of debris from the falling fireworks.”
Tens of thousands of spectators enjoyed the first two nights of the championships, with the judges awarding first prize for the best display to Flashpoint Fireworks.
