Hollywood legend Jane Russell performs at Liverpool Cathedral

SCREEN goddess Jane Russell crossed the Atlantic to headline a star-studded fundraising concert at Liverpool Cathedral last night.

The Hollywood legend, whose film credits as a voluptuous brunette included The Outlaw – which caused a public outcry in 1943 thanks to her shapely figure – revelled in the spotlight as she sashayed her way through three numbers.

The one-time sex siren, now 88, took the top billing at a one-off dinner and concert held in the spectacular Cathedral Well.

Russell has a long track record as a singer, including recording with Frank Sinatra in 1950.

Last night, backed only by a grand piano and long-serving collaborator Peter Clark, she earned a standing ovation from an eager audience.

Before the show, she told the Daily Post: “I do not fly so I came over on the Queen Mary and only got off the boat at 7am today.

“I was not even sure we were doing a show tonight and I have not had time to look around, but this [cathedral] is gorgeous and I am glad to help.”

Ms Russell, dressed in black leggings and a gold brocade embossed top, went without the normal minders and entourage a Hollywood legend might be expected to keep.

She posed for scores of photographs and chatted happily with fans, minutes before taking to the stage.

With the Cathedral nave and altar as her backdrop and the spotlight catching the gold detail in her outfit, she battled swirling acoustics and earned hearty applause.

She appeared to forget some of the lyrics to Bye Bye Baby – a number made famous by Marilyn Monroe, whom Russell starred opposite in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes – but passed off the moment with consummate ease.
