LIVERPOOL pupils flew the flag for languages after their primary was named Spanish School of the Year.
Youngsters at Arnot St Mary CofE primary, in Walton, spent yesterday “basqueing” in their achievement.
Teacher Teresa Miller, a native Spanish speaker from the north Basque Country who has led the school’s Spanish programme, said she was thrilled with the accolade.
She said: “We were one of the first primary schools in the country to start teaching Spanish.
“It is very rare for students to start so young in nursery up to Year 6.
“Schools usually teach 30 minutes each week, but we teach 90 so our students are very advanced.
“It is all about making Spanish fun and the rewards come when the students get back from holiday and said they loved Spain and spoke the language.”
Special guests yesterday included a member of the Spanish Consulate and the Spanish secretary for education.
