Children sowing seeds of success

EFFORTS to get children growing their own pumpkins with a free seed handout could mean an extra million lanterns lighting up windowsills at Halloween.

Pumpkin growers have already hailed this year’s muggy and wet summer as one of the best yet for the crop, with conditions helping produce record yields.

Now the National Trust, whose Food Glorious Food campaign aims to reconnect people with where their food comes from, said the perfect growing conditions could have helped produce up to a million pumpkins from their free seed giveaway.

During the summer, the National Trust gave away 170m free seeds – enough to grow up to one million pumpkins, 26m bags of rocket leaves and 70m lettuces – to encourage families grow their own veg.
