Internet safety scheme launched

A NEW programme for parents to keep their children safe on the internet will be launched today by academics.

With fears growing about paedophiles grooming victims on the net and cyber bullying among youngsters, Newcastle University experts have developed a training course which will be rolled out nationally.

It will include advice on tools which can tell parents which sites children have visited, a guide on how youngsters use social networking and using “time-out” settings to block internet access late at night.

The university’s Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security teamed up with the North East Fraud Forum, Microsoft and the Northern Grid for Learning to develop the programme to be taught in schools, learning centres and other organisations across the UK.

Leading it will be Phil Butler, a former Detective Chief Inspector with Northumbria Police and founding member of the North East Fraud Forum, who said it responded to people’s fears.
