SWEEPING new plans could see new towns spring up on Green Belt land in Merseyside.
The massive changes are one of the options that will be looked at by Knowsley’s ruling cabinet this week.
Nick Kavanagh, Knowsley’s executive director for regeneration, suggests in his outline report that an extensive new building programme is the only way to meet the Government’s current housing targets.
Mr Kavanagh said: “Government targets require the Local Development Framework (LDF) to identify land for nearly 10,000 new dwellings up to 2026 – about a 15% increase on Knowsley’s current housing.”
He suggests three alternatives to meet this target in a new LDF that will be formally put in place in 2012.
The first option would not alter regeneration plans already in the pipeline.
A second alternative is a more ambitious project to increase the scale of development in existing towns such as Huyton, Tower Hill in Kirkby and land in South Prescot.
