THE recession is encouraging people to travel abroad, with graduates going because of poor job prospects back home, a survey claims.
Escaping UK doom and gloom was the reason given by 37% of those who have recently travelled abroad for a month or more, or who are planning trips, the poll by the InsureandGo company showed.
And 28% of graduates intending to take a year off after university are doing so because they cannot find a job.
Of the month-or-more travellers, 5% were taking extended breaks because they had lost their jobs, while 4% were taking breaks as they had resigned.
In addition, 4% are travelling because they think it will be easier to find work abroad.
InsureandGo founder Perry Wilson said: “It appears the seemingly constant flow of bad news in the UK is encouraging people to get away for a while.”
