World Expo 2010 mascot Haibao was chosen from international competition

HAIBAO was chosen as the ambassador and mascot of the World Expo 2010 from 26,655 entries in an international competition.

The design of the mascot was first sketched on the back of a receipt in a coffee shop by Taiwanese designer Wu Yoken.

He entered it into the competition and it was selected, then revised by Shanghai designer Shao Longtu to end up with the final version.

Haibao is a traditionally lucky name in China meaning treasure of the sea. It is also the shape of the Chinese character ren, which means “people”.

Its hair was inspired by an ocean wave and its blue colour also represents Shanghai’s location on China’s east coast, while organisers claim its big feet shows China has “the ability and faith to host a successful Expo”.

Haibaos are prevalent across Shanghai, with 68 placed across the Chinese city.

Mike Taylor, Liverpool Vision’s director of investment and enterprise, said: “The arrival of Haibao is a really exciting part of the run-up to the World Expo in Shanghai next May.

“By welcoming Haibao, we are welcoming further business and friendship links which will benefit Liverpool.”
