Online records reveal star Jude Law's posh past

ACTOR Jude Law is descended from a family of bakers, while director Guy Ritchie’s ancestors had servants at their country retreat, research revealed today.

The details of the Alfie star’s family history are revealed in the 1911 Census, which is being published online for the first time.

The 36-year-old, who stars as Dr Watson in the forthcoming Sherlock Holmes film, is the great-grandson of William Law, who is recorded in 1911 as a master baker. He lived with his wife, five children and two servants in a nine-bedroom house in Brixton, south London.

Meanwhile, the true extent of Guy Ritchie’s posh background is revealed on the website findmy past.com. The 41-year-old ex of Madonna is the great-great grandson of retired Major-General Edward McLaughlin and his wife, Annie.

In 1911, they lived in an even larger house than Law’s ancestors, 16-room Byron Hall, in Worthing, on the south coast. Ritchie is also a distant descendant of Edward I.

The 1901 Census shows the author of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, may have started a relationship with Jean Leckie before the death of his wife, Louise, in 1906.

The records show that, five years before the death of his first wife, Sir Arthur was living at the Ashdown Forest Hotel, in Sussex, with Leckie and his mother, Mary Doyle.
