Mike Stubbs, director of FACT, which will be co- ordinating the project, said: "Projected Column is an ambitious, exciting piece of public art by one of Britain’s most significant artists.
"It will form a sculptural landmark for the North- West, reflecting the dynamism of a city that has undergone major cultural and economic development as Capital of Culture in 2008." The Arts Councils of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales joined forces to launch the £5.4m project competition with London 2012 in March.
More than 2,000 artists applied and their ideas whittled down by Manchester-centric judging panel including the chief executive of the city’s Chinese Arts Centre, artistic director of hip hop theatre company Breaking Cycles and Manchester-based artist Naomi Kashiwagi.
