CITY leaders are set to approve an application that could strengthen Liverpool’s case for around 5,000 government jobs.
They are expected to agree an application for an 18-storey office block on Pall Mall, following a recent site visit by North West minister Phil Woolas.
Although there has been no explicit link between the development and the government, Mr Woolas visited the site with Labour group leader Cllr Joe Anderson and said Liverpool was a “leading contender” for thousands of Ministry of Justice jobs.
It is understood the ministry wants to relocate an initial 1,000 jobs within the next 18 to 24 months, with more to follow in later years.
On his visit, Mr Woolas said: “What is important is there is a worked-up plan here.
“Liverpool’s case clearly has substance to it and is bound to be a leading contender.
“Liverpool has been reborn as a hub for business, culture and regeneration.”
The bid, entered by Belfast-based West Bay Capital Ltd, is for an office development including one eight- and one nine-storey tower with an 18-storey slope-roofed skyscraper between.
