Royal Air Force Association club hit by armed robbery
ARMED raiders carrying a sawn-off shotgun and knives carried out a terrifying attack on staff at a popular Royal Air Force Association club.
Four workers at the Kirkby RAFA club, in Broad Lane, were clearing up after a 75th birthday party shortly after 1am on Sunday when the masked gang, believed to be four men, burst into the venue brandishing the weapons.
One committee member was injured after being hit across the head with the butt of the shotgun.
A spokesman for the club said: “It affected everyone quite badly – the staff were all very shaken up.
“Everyone was packing away after the party and it was all very normal.
“Suddenly the gang ran in screaming for the keys and shouting at them to get down.
“The most worrying thing is they seemed to be in a blind panic. They were not in any way professional and that made everyone more anxious because someone panicking with a shotgun can lead to anything.
“They held the secretary, a committee member, the stewardess and a barmaid captive as they tried to rob the place.
“They did not manage to find safe keys, which were not kept in the building – they ran out of time because a panic alarm had been activated.
“All they had was the stewardess’ handbag.
“It is a popular club and we have had lots of support from the community and plenty of well- wishers.”
