But she said: “We are looking to have trust board partners with science and art and we have made tentative approaches to the Tate and Lady Lever Art Gallery because of what they could offer the girls. They would see art in a professional dimension in massive public forums, they have huge facilities for art and huge contacts as well as the staff training that would come with it.”

If they agree, the school hopes the two bodies’ involvement would include curators working with pupils at the school, as well as lessons at their own venues – which have already displayed the girls’ artwork.

“It would be both inspirational and aspirational but this is at a very early stage, though, and if they are not able to do so then we would seek other organisations of similar calibre,” Mrs Dixon stressed.

Last night the plans were enthusiastically met by the Lady Lever Art Gallery with a spokesman saying it was “delighted” at the school’s interest. Stephen Guy, spokesman for National Museums Liverpool, which represents the Lady Lever Art Gallery, said its school outreach programmes were a major part of the organisation.

On the possibility of joining the school’s trust board, he added: “We are delighted to hear of any development in this field. That’s what we are here for.”

A Tate Liverpool spokeswoman added: “Tate Liverpool has always worked closely with schools around the North-West and we are extremely proud of our schools programme. We look forward to being in contact with Prenton School for Girls in the near future.”

Other possible partners include Unilever and Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, which would see girls work with experts and help the school’s mission to encourage girls to break into the science industry.
