KNOWSLEY Council awarded one of its highest honours to former council leader and mayor, Jim Keight OBE.
Mr Keight was given the title of Honorary Alderman in recognition of the outstanding service he has given to the council.
Mr Keight served as a Member of Knowsley Council from its formation in 1974 through until 2007, with the exception of just one year. He was Leader of the Council for 17 years and served as Mayor in 2005/6.
He was awarded the OBE for his services to local government.
Cllr Ron Round, leader of Knowsley council, said: “The title of Honorary Alderman is only awarded in very special circumstances and we have only previously bestowed the honour on seven people.
“Jim Keight has given outstanding service to Knowsley over 40 years, as a councillor, council leader and Mayor and deserves this honour.
“Among his achievements was his campaign to save the borough when plans to redraw boundaries would have seen Knowsley disappear from the map.”
