MP Peter Kilfoyle condemns moves to make Blair EU president

MERSEY MP Peter Kilfoyle condemned moves to install Tony Blair as 'President of Europe' - because he led Britain into an "illegal and immoral war" in Iraq.

The Walton MP broke ranks to become the first Labour figure to insist the former PM's record meant he was "not a fit and proper person" for the job.

Mr Kilfoyle tabled a Parliamentary motion demanding a "full public debate" before Gordon Brown officially backs Mr Blair for the £247,000-a-year post.

And he added: "It's a matter of his record, with George Bush, in Iraq.

"I don't see how somebody who took us to war on what many of us believe to be an illegal basis – and certainly an immoral one – who took us into that terrible, terrible war, is a fit and proper person to be President of the European Union."

Mr Kilfoyle said many other Labour MPs backed his protest, adding: "All the feedback I have had has been very much in support."

And, reminded that he once helped Mr Blair become Labour's leader, he said: "I signed those nomination papers – but I was also the first person to resign from his Government."

Mr Blair could be appointed within weeks, if the Lisbon Treaty is finally ratified by the Czech Republic.
