New swipe card technology fitted to Liverpool’s Stagecoach buses

PASSENGERS travelling on some buses on Merseyside can swap their loose change for a swipe card after new technology was installed.

Stagecoach’s 200 Merseyside buses are the first in the country to try out the new PayPass payment method, which means card carriers do not need to pay with cash, sign a slip or enter a pin.

The new card has a magnetic chip which can be swiped against a strip fitted onto each StageCoach bus – similar to Oyster cards on London’s Tube.

Bosses said it should it should enable quicker and easier transactions.

Stephen Riggans, managing director of Stagecoach Merseyside, said: “We are delighted to be piloting this new scheme.

“Liverpool was an ideal choice. There has been a lot of investment in the retail sector and the new card compliments this.”

The card was launched by Stagecoach in Williamson Square.

Mr Riggans added: “We are proud to be leading the way by introducing highly innovative projects.”
