Village landmark that was never forgotten
THEY say an Elephant never forgets – and neither do the residents of Woolton Village.
After years of fighting, the village residents have welcomed the return of one of south Liverpool’s most famous landmarks – the elephant’s head.
A brand new cast of the head was unveiled yesterday sticking out of the side of the newly-opened Elephant Pub.
It follows a two-year battle by Woolton Society and Woolton Residents Association to have the distinctive animal head sculpture restored.
In March, 2007, Korova Corporation removed the sculpture from the Grade II listed former Elephant Hotel, in Woolton Street.
Its distinctive head forms part of the architectural details outlined in its official listing description.
The elephant was removed without listed building consent and ended up smashed beyond repair, causing outrage among local residents.
Now, a Woolton businessman and two friends have taken over the tenancy and re-opened the former “Casa del Cocodrilo” as the Elephant pub – and re-instated its namesake.
