STAFF at a West Lancashire law firm were allegedly given just 24 hours notice that it was closing.
Workers at The Kennedy Partnership, in Ormskirk, were called into a meeting and told the practice would close the following day and their employment would be terminated.
Many rushed back to their desks to break the news to as many clients as possible and transfer files of ongoing matters to other law firms.
Last night it still remained unclear why the Railway Road firm, which had been in business for 200 years, had closed.
Hayley McMahon, an employee in the accounts department for 13 years, said: “We have no trade union to represent us, we have no recourse whatsoever.
“No doubt other firms in the area will step in and take over any outstanding matters. Deeds and wills will be released to clients as requested. However, for most staff members, the memory of their final days at The Kennedy Partnership will be bitter ones.”
All four of The Kennedy Partnership’s West Lancashire offices were officially closed on October 14.
Client Christina Washington, of Skelmersdale, said: “I have my deeds and will with The Kennedy Partnership, and was shocked when I heard they’d closed.
“I am worried because I am not in the best of health at the moment and if I do die what will my children have to do to get my will?
Betty Lawson, of Burscough, said: “I am surprised and saddened that The Kennedy Partnership has closed. They have had my house deeds and will for many years now, and I would just like to know what will happen to them now.”
The firm was unavailable for comment.
