University of Liverpool facing £1m cuts in historic building maintenance funding

Last night a University of Liverpool spokesman said: “The university has more than 50 old and listed buildings.

“Properties such as the Victoria Building enhance the student experience at Liverpool and are an important part of the city’s cultural heritage.

“The university is talking to Hefce concerning proposals for reduction in funding.”

A Hefce spokesman said it was faced with a government directive to find £180m savings.

He added: “One area we are looking at is the allocation to old and historic buildings which has been included in the teaching grants of the universities which qualify. This is the subject of consultation.”

Dai Wynne, a member of the Liverpool Heritage Forum and Merseyside Civic Society, urged the university to find money elsewhere to help maintain the buildings should the proposed cuts materialise.

“It would be false economy to allow anything to slide,” he said.
